MISSOULA – The 51st annual Kyiyo Pow Wow is underway in the Adams Center at the University of Montana.
The event is hosted by the University of Montana Native American Student Association and is one of the oldest pow wows in the United States.
Contests, dance, drumming and a basketball tournament are expected to draw a big turnout for the two-day event with organizers anticipating thousands will attend despite the unusual date.
“This year we usually plan for about like 2,000 or 3,000 people. Sometimes it’s higher, sometimes it’s a little lower. This year we’re hoping for a really good turnout. We’re a little nervous because it’s Easter weekend,” said Alice Boyer with the UM Native American Student Association.
“Normally our pow wow doesn’t fall on Easter weekend. But we’re hoping that things like the Easter egg hunt on the Oval will maybe help people feel like they can still participate in the Easter while being here, she added.
General admission costs $5 while seniors and kids under six years old can get in for free.
