CORVALLIS – Corvallis Primary School third grade teacher Lore Mayer is using live habitats to engage her students in science.

She says the opportunity her students have had to watch the life-cycle of a frog, from an egg to tadpole, to full-grown frog has been a highlight of her classroom this year.

Her live habitat collection is not just limited to frogs. The students are also observing fish, crabs, and snails. But Mayer is in need of money to replenish her supplies and keep the live habitat a part of the class.

Mayer is this week’s winner of a Republic Services and KPAX-TV One Class at a Time grant and will be receiving $250, which will help her purchase the supplies she needs.

“It’s helping us replenish some of the fish, and food, and supplies that we’ll need to keep it going,” Mayer said.
