MISSOULA — Meadow Hill Middle School is putting an added focus on literacy this school year, and this week’s One Class at a Time grant winner is spending her money on books for her students.
KPAX-TV General Manager Bob Hermes awarded the Republic Services and KPAX $250 grant to eighth grade English teacher Britney Matz.
Matz says she has a variety of reading levels in her classroom and is going to try to meet those various levels with books that capture her students' imaginations. She says that with students having more freedom to work on their own, she knows more options will promote more excitement.
"We’re really pushing what we’re calling accelerated reader time and we’ve built that into our day,” Matz said. “We have about a half-hour each day that students are just spending reading, and so the goal really is that they build their stamina and they cultivate kind of an enjoyment for reading."
