MISSOULA — Meadow Hill Middle School special needs and life skills teacher Laurie Anderson is this week’s winner of a Republic Services and KPAX-TV One Class at a Time grant.
KPAX General Manager Bob Hermes awarded Anderson the check which she will use to buy materials needed for books she is making for her students.
The books use pictures in place of words, which are clues that her students solve to help them figure out the meaning of the story.
Anderson wants to thank those community members that are helping her assemble these books.
She says having this type of reading material in her classroom helps with their independence skills.
“They have some independent skills, so they can pick up these books and after practice, they can read them independently,” Anderson said.
“They develop a joy for reading and a joy for literature and they’re able to lose themselves in a book like everybody likes to do," Anderson added.
