HAMILTON – This week’s One Class at a Time winner is looking to buy rock tumblers for her eighth grade students.

Hamilton Middle School Earth Science teacher Becky McGillivray and her students take regular trips to the nearby Bitterroot River to collect rocks along the shore.

Her students study various components of the rocks including abrasion and says her students enjoy studying how these rocks weather over time.

Her class has been pushing for McGillivray to buy a rock tumbler, which will allow them to mechanically watch the process of abrasion. Thanks to Republic Services and KPAX-TV, McGillivray was awarded a $250 check for the tumbler.

“This will give them a nice hands-on experience where they are actually outdoors,” McGillivray said. “Going to an area that is local, finding rocks that are of interest to them, collaborating and then being able to see something change through abrasion first-hand.”
