WEST GLACIER – Glacier National Park leaders are expecting to release a plan addressing crowding and congestion along Going to the Sun Road following several years of consideration.

The Corridor Plan is an attempt to address the growing visitation using Going-to-the-Sun Road, along with the parking lots, trails and visitors centers along the route.

Park spokesperson Lauren Alley says they have seen a drastic increase in visitation peaking in 2017 when over 3.3 million people came through the gates.

Some of these plans include limiting parking at Logan Pass to allow more people to briefly stop and then continue on their way to keep traffic moving. There are also proposals for additional parking, and enhancing the shuttle system.

Alley says all those extra visitors are also impacting trails, like Hidden Lake and Avalanche, and the park is looking at ways to “harden” some of those routes to protect vegetation from being trampled.

Public comments are expected this spring. Click here for more information on the proposed transportation plan.
