BOZEMAN – Good smells and flavors found their way into Montana State University’s Hannon Hall Friday.

High school students aiming at careers in the culinary arts got a chance to show their cooking skills as part of a statewide contest.

Ten high schools went chef-to-chef as part of the 2019 ProStart Invitational.

Each team was charged with designing their own menu and restaurant, including pricing, then had to cook a three-course meal in one hour.

The winner, picked by judges, gets a chance to represent Montana at nationals in Washington D.C.

“There’s a lot of support from the industry for this program because a lot of these kids are finding their future career, they are finding their passion, they are finding something they really love to do,” said Roth Jordan, lead judge and one of the owners of Montana Ale Works. “They are getting to compete in a culinary competition and they are taking it very seriously.”

Twenty-five schools and more than 2,000 students, total, are involved in the invitational statewide.
