UPDATE: 12:56 p.m. - February 4, 2025

A standoff early Tuesday at a residence in the Billings Heights started at 3:49 a.m. when officers responded to a weapons complaint in the 400 block of Jerrie Lane, police said in a press release issued late Tuesday morning.

It was reported that gunshots were heard in the area and believed to be coming from a camper. Officers who responded also heard gunshots coming from that area, the press release states.

The initial investigation indicated there was one person inside a residence firing multiple rounds. Billings police officers, Yellowstone County SWAT, drone, and negotiators were called to the scene.

Negotiations with the suspect continued until approximately 7:22 a.m. when the suspect came out of the residence. Once outside, the suspect followed commands and was taken into custody.

The suspect, who police identified as 53-year-old William Van Meter of Billings, was evaluated for any injuries and mental health concerns. He faces possible charges of criminal endangerment and assault on a peace officer.

Detectives remained at the scene through the morning.
