Missoula Hoagieville Xpress turns back the clock with car hops

If anyone is feeling nostalgic about how the original Hoagieville on Higgins used to do business, they might be in luck.

Hoagieville Xpress, located on East Broadway -- which opened late last year -- is reverting back to car hop serving, similar to the original, which closed its doors at the beginning of last summer.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, using the car hop format has allowed Hoagieville Xpress to keep its doors open, and owner Taylor Alonzo said the transition has been smooth thanks to Hoagieville's history using that process.

“From working at Higgins for five-and-a-half years, all through high school, I decided to bring back kind of the car hop mentality where you pull up to a stop, we have a menu," Alonzo explained.

"Our car hops come out and take your order. You can have it to stay in your car or we can make it to go. You just don’t have to leave your vehicle. Really it eliminates contact with doors, entryways and being around anyone but yourself and your vehicle.

"It's something that we'll be using going forward for the weeks and months to come until we all get through this."

Alonzo and his staff began using car hop for orders two weeks ago. He said they've stayed busy and that the feedback has been positive, with most enjoying how similar it is to the original Hoagieville.

"They get a kick out of it since it is like Higgins used to be," Alonzo said. "It's a quick version of what Higgins was. We don't have an awning or anything like that but they like the throwback to what it used to be."
