The American Red Cross is issuing a call for donors of all blood types to give blood or platelets.
The organization notes in a news release that since influenza has been escalating across the country, it's preventing some donors from giving.
The Red Cross also reports that during winter weather has been threatening to cancel blood drives causing a critical shortage of type O blood.
Experts note that donating one unit of blood can save up to three lives.
Donors of all blood types –- especially types O positive and O negative -– are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets.
Appointments can be made using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting their website, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
Additionally, high school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
