MISSOULA – Missoula’s Poverello Center is now partially opening to help feed their guests after they were forced to close their kitchen and men’s dormitory due to seeping sewage.
The kitchen was out for nearly a week and serving guests sack lunches for the time being.
Poverello Center Executive Director Amy Allison Thompson says many of the shelter’s guests are already in crisis mode, so having a downed facility and limited food and shelter impacts a big part of their daily life.
Although the kitchen will partially open, they still are unable to serve hot meals beyond soup and sandwiches. And to add to the struggle, the men’s dormitory will be out for a few more weeks.
Allison-Thompson says things are on the mend but told MTN News that the shelter’s full recovery will rely on community donations and support.
“Financial donations are going to be incredibly helpful. Insurance does cover a portion of this, but we anticipate that the cost will be higher than what insurance reimburses,” she explained. We can absolutely use the financial support of the community to get back on our feet.”
The Poverello Center will continue to need sandwich making materials as well as a few staple items. They also are sending a big “thank you” to the community for their continued support.
