MISSOULA — The moment all of Missoula has been waiting for is here: the Higgins Avenue bridge project started Monday morning and is scheduled to last well into next year.

The first phase of the project will replace and widen the west side of the bridge deck while phase two will finish the eastern side.

Officials expect the eastern half to begin in the summer of 2021.

MDT understands the location of the project is heavily trafficked and traffic patterns might change, so they have developed alert systems for the public.

"We have a project hotline we have a text alert system and we have an email system that the public can sign up for and receive weekly updates on what’s going to happen and what our impacts are going to be," MDT Engineering Project Manager Matt Straub said.

It's recommended you sign up for that system soon as the project is expected to last until Spring of 2022.
