MISSOULA — It was back to school for thousands of University of Montana students in Missoula.

It's an exciting first day of class on Monday as students walked across the Oval, went to the bookstore and went to class.

Enrollment went up again over the summer at UM, marking a hopeful start to the fall semester. UM Communications Manager Kerri Simic says he thinks the university is on the right track.

“The students seem like they're in a great mood and they're excited to get to their classes,” Simic said. “And it's really rewarding to run around -- I've been out taking pictures of our students and they just seem happy and excited to be starting that fall semester,” he added.

UM broke a record last year by reaching more than $90 million in research expenditures and this year they want to surpass $100 million.

Simic also told MTN News that he's hopeful enrollment will start increasing soon. The head count last spring reached more than 10,000 students and we’ll have the new numbers in a few weeks for this Fall
