BUTTE — Butte’s Council of Commissioners voted 10-2 Wednesday evening in favor of having the chief executive sign the consent decree that outlines the Superfund cleanup for Butte.

Commissioners Jim Fisher and Bill Anderson were the only ones to vote against signing the five-year plan to cleanup mine waste. The consent decree was the result of 30 years of negotiations with the Atlantic-Richfield Co., the Environmental Protection Agency, Butte and other agencies.

Butte Chief Executive Dave Palmer said he will sign the decree. It will now go before the state’s district court for final approval, before cleanup can begin.
