Distilleries that helped produce hand sanitizer during the start of the pandemic won't have to pay thousands of dollars in fees after all.

Hundreds of distilleries needed to register as drug makers to produce hand sanitizer, which requires an annual fee of about 15-thousand dollars.

The Department of Health and Human Services said the Food and Drug Administration did not receive approval to bill distilleries.

The department told distilleries they do not have to pay the fee.

A spokesperson for the agency said these businesses should be applauded for their actions - not taxed.
