Pedestrian struck and killed by train in Melrose

A pedestrian was reportedly struck and killed by a train in Melrose Friday morning, Oct. 25, 2024.

According to Sheriff Ed Lester, multiple agencies responded at 10:16 a.m. on Friday to a report that a train may have struck a vehicle. Investigation at the scene, near the train's intersection with Trapper Creek Road in Melrose, found that a man who had been standing on the railroad tracks was struck by a northbound Union Pacific train.

Sheriff Lester said the train crew sounded an audible alarm and applied the train's brakes but were unable to stop. The man stayed on the tracks until the train struck him.

The sheriff says the man was a 58-year-old resident of Melrose. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Butte Fire Rescue, A-1 Ambulance, Montana Highway Patrol, the Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office, Madison County Sheriff's Office, and LifeFlight all responded, along with Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement.
