WEST YELLOWSTONE — Two earthquakes rumbled areas near West Yellowstone around 4:40 AM Friday morning according to the US Geological Survey.
The first was a 3.1 magnitude earthquake at 4:39 a.m. followed by a 2.5 magnitude quake at 4:40 a.m.
Both earthquakes were located 15 miles east northeast of West Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park. The USGS website shows that the earthquakes were about two miles deep.
Small earthquakes are not uncommon in the area. Another swarm of earthquakes was reported about the same time as the Yellowstone area earthquakes near Cascade, Idaho ranging from 2.5 to 3.1 magnitude.
