GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – First responders have been kept busy in recent days at Glacier National Park.
Last week alone saw a car drive off Going to the Sun Road, a Whitefish man go missing in the park and a bicyclist crashing while avoiding a collision with a grizzly bear.
Park spokeswoman Lauren Alley told MTN News that they have seen an increase of 40% in emergency call volume as compared to last year at this time.
She says the jump could be due to a number of things including the weather, the experience level of visitors and the time of day.
Alley says one of the best ways to decrease incidents is to eliminate minor accidents.
“Wearing proper shoes so you don’t twist your ankle…bringing an extra bottle of water so you don’t suffer from heat exhaustion five miles out into the backcountry,” she commented.
“Bringing an extra set of keys, so if you lock yourself out you have another set — all of those things can really help make your trip much more enjoyable,” Alley continued.”
She’s is reminding visitors to slow down on the road and pay attention to surroundings.
Visitors should also continue to plan for pavement preservation this week which will cause delays in the early morning before 5 a.m.
