HAMILTON — Ravalli County health officials report that pertussis is still making the rounds in the Bitterroot.
Symptoms start out very similarly to the common cold: runny nose, low grade fever and irritating dry cough.
Pertussis – also known as whooping cough -- is a highly communicable illness and potentially severe for our at-risk population, but it is easily treated. Ravalli County health officials advise that if you suspect pertussis, get in to your provider for testing and treatment.
Preventative treatment is recommended for all close contacts with a diagnosis of pertussis to help reduce spread. Additionally, people who are diagnosed with pertussis are advised to stay home until they've finished treatment.
The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) reports that since January 1, 2019, 475 cases of pertussis have been reported across the state as compared to 82 cases reported at the same time in 2018.
