PLAINS – When a train passes near Plains, wild horses will run alongside it in honor of veterans and the community and after 20 months of work, you can now check out the 1,000 foot long burlap art installation for yourself.

The herd of horses is a nod to the town’s namesake, Wild Horse Plains and artists Dave Williams and Haylee Steinebach worked on it for almost two years.

The work highlights veteran art and a veteran outreach organization founded by Williams. Three upright horses are painted in the colors that honor disabled veterans and the families of those who have taken their own lives or died in combat.

Williams says they are the guardians of the herd of running horses that represent the people of Plains.

“I want you to come to my community and check it out — Ya know, visit the people here. They are amazing people. I live in a great town…so I want to highlight that for them as well,” Williams said.

He told MTN News that pieces of the painting may be sold to fund Joint Operation Mariposa which is a veterans outreach organization.
