Victim in fatal Bridger Range avalanche identified

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office has identified 36-year-old Peter Lazar as the mankilled after being caught in an avalanche in the Bridger Mountain Range.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Bridger Ski Patrol, Gallatin N.F. Avalanche Center and Central Helicopters responded to an avalanche on the west side of the Bridgers.

Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center said on its Facebook page Lazar was carried about 1,000 feet down a steep slope and suffered fatal trauma as a result.

Two skiers in the area witnessed Lazar getting caught in the avalanche and were able to locate him quickly. They attempted to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.

The Avalanche Center said in its post that Lazar “was a well known and loved local and we are deeply saddened to report this tragic accident.”
