A trio of grizzly bear cubs that were seen earlier this week in a backyard near Polson are prompting a safety reminder from CSKT wildlife officials.

According to a social media post on the CSKT Wildlife Management Facebook page, the 2-year old grizzlies “have been traveling down the east side of Flathead Lake and have been seen periodically with reports coming to FWP as well as CSKT.”

Tribal officials are asking that if people encounter the grizzlies -- or other bears -- in their yards, “to make the encounter uncomfortable for them.”

“We know they are amazing animals and watching them is a treat, but if they are feeling safe and comfortable around people and homes this will eventually lead to a negative situation some where down the line!” the post reads.

A video was sent to MTN News by a person who saw three bears Friday morning along the east side of Flathead Lake near Paradise Cove.

Here are some suggestions to follow if you encounter bears around your home:

  • Stay Calm – If the bear finds no food, it will usually leave.
  • Stay Away – bears may attack when they feel threatened.
  • Warn Others – Bring kids and pets indoors. Remind others to keep their distance.
  • Scare that Bear – Make sure the bear has a clear escape path. MAKE LOTS OF NOISE: yell, clap, bang pots, use a wildlife deterrent horn, or turn on lights. Don’t let the bear become comfortable around your home. DON'T PHYSICALLY CHASE THE BEAR all these suggestions are at a safe distance!!!
  • Remove Attractants – After the bear has left, make sure your home is bear proof so it won’t come back. Call us for suggestions if needed. (406) 675-2700.

People are also being asked to consider bear resistant garbage cans if you live in areas where bears frequent. For residents self-haul garbage, CSKT has one bear resistant can per household available for $10, but there are only a few left.

If Republic Services hauls your garbage, they have a bear resistant can available through their service. Call (406) 676-4330 for more information.
