KALISPELL – A meeting was held Wednesday evening for community members and contractors from around the country to discuss the completion of the Sperry Chalet renovations.
The historic Sperry Chalet burned down in the Sprague fire in Glacier National Park in the summer of 2017. Built in 1913, the structure was one of the last historic chalets in the country.

The first phase of the reconstruction and stabilization was completed last summer when beams were installed inside the structure to keep from caving in and a roof was placed on top.
It wasn’t an easy job as materials have to be airlifted to the site as Sperry Chalet sits at 3,000-foot elevation gain. The reconstruction isn’t cheap either. Glacier Park Conservancy started an action fund to rebuild the Sperry Chalet and so far have over $500,000.00 raised.
Park officials are now looking toward Phase 2 of the rebuilding project and are looking for contractors across the country to do the work. Contractors interested in the project are asked to submit their price, technical and business proposals.
Liz Hallas, architect with Anderson and Hallas tells us where the chalet is going and what folks can expect when the chalet opens in 2020.
“So, it’s very similar to what was there. The layout and the rooms very similar. We had to make some upgrades for the stairs to be code compliant,” Hallas said. “So, there will be some minor modifications but I think for the first time visitor they may not notice those.”
The stone masonry on the outside structure are all original and will remain the same. Hallas says it’s an honor to be involved in this reconstruction process and the hope is to have the completed chalet open in 2020.
